Bears Create New Trash Pickup Schedule for the Summer
June 21, 2012 /
The black bears are setting up residency at Sunrise Mountain Village, as well as numerous areas around Killington. They appear to be rather comfortable with humans, and have been sighted numerous times during the daylight hours. Since they are large, potentially dangerous, and a destructive nuisance, we want to encourage them to leave the community by eliminating their food sources. So, we have decided to take some strong precautions and will need your help to discourage their presence.
- Starting June 23, through Labor Day weekend we will be picking up trash immediately after 9am. Please put the trash out only between the hours of 7am and 9am for pick up. If you miss that time, wait until the next day, or contact us to do a trash pick-up from inside your unit. Never leave the trash by your front door.
- There will be no more recycling bins until further notice. All trash is trash. Empty drink bottles, jars, paper towels, food cans, etc… have a food odor and will attract the bears.
- Please do not venture out around the trash areas at night. That is when the bears are more apt to be roaming around looking for food.
- If you bring your dog with you, walk him with a leash so he won’t go chasing after a bear scent.
- If you do see a bear lurking around the trash bins, please try to safely scare them off by making a very loud noise, such as a car horn, whistle, or yell at the top of your lungs.
- Always maintain a safe distance from the bears. They have extremely quick acceleration abilities.
