In the Blink of an Eye

In the blink of an eye the year 2022 is about to end. In the blink of an eye, the unseasonably warm weather in November changed to seasonably cold temps to make the Women’s World Cup event a huge success at Killington. In the blink of an eye, there was a snowstorm in mid-December enabling Killington to open the mountain for ski and ride enthusiasts to enjoy once again. And in the blink of an eye, the Sunrise lift opened this past week!

Thursday, December 29th the skiing was like early spring conditions with sunny blue skies. The natural snow trails were delightful with a packed powder base, and just enough rocks showing through to keep you on your toes. The skier’s right on Needles Eye, between the lift towers and power poles was a fan favorite, provided you cautiously negotiated the stepped topography to avoid the rocky ledges, to be rewarded with great snow conditions in between. It was like a cream-filled crispy confection. The same held true for Thimble, Vertigo, Breakaway, and Highline. Of course, the groomed trails were good for practicing edge control with a surface like sand on a tiled floor.

Then, in the blink of an eye, skiing the natural snow trails on Friday, December 30, became a non-starter, and the groomed trails dominated with a slightly softer and forgiving surface. As the unseasonably warm weather moves in over the NYE weekend, we will continue to be thankful for the superior snowmaking Killington provides and wait once again for the next snowstorm to grace the mountain with much needed snow. Then, in the blink of an eye, we will be back to skiing from Nowhere to Somewhere and all trails in between!
