They’re Back!
June 24, 2013 /
After a winter of hibernation, the black bears have apparently returned to Sunrise to spend the summer. We would like to discourage them from setting up residency here. A mother bear and cub, plus a large male have been seen roaming the village, with their noses trained on the trash houses for dining delights. Since they are large, potentially dangerous, and a destructive nuisance, we will implement the following measures to motivate their relocation to a wilderness environment. Your participation will be key to discouraging them from summering at Sunrise.
- Starting June 23, through Labor Day weekend we will be picking up trash immediately after 9am. Please put the trash out only between the hours of 7am and 9am for pick up. If you miss that time, wait until the next day, or contact us to do a trash pick-up from inside your unit. Never leave the trash by your front door. Please remind your guests to follow the procedures as well.
- There will be no more recycling bins until further notice. All trash is trash. Empty drink bottles, jars, paper towels, food cans, etc… have a food odor and will attract the bears. If you acquire a significant amount of recycling, please let us know and we can come to your unit to remove it.
- Please do not venture out around the trash areas at night. That is when the bears are more apt to be roaming around looking for food.
- If you bring your dog with you, walk him with a leash so he won’t go chasing after a bear scent.
- If you do see a bear lurking around the trash bins, please try to safely scare them off by making a very loud noise, such as a car horn, whistle, or yell at the top of your lungs.
- Always maintain a safe distance from the bears, and do not get between a mother and her cubs. Momma bears have extremely quick acceleration abilities, and are know to be aggressive.
